A children's book is a usability test that never lies

A children's book is a usability test that never lies.

When a young reader cannot follow the page, there is no workaround, no help desk, and no training session. The book gets closed. The feedback is immediate and honest.

That discipline carries straight into interface work. Words and pictures have to agree. A pattern has to hold long enough for a reader to trust it before a surprise means anything. The next step has to be findable without instructions.

We design books the same way we design components: consistent structure, plain language, and one clear thing happening at a time. Consistency is not boring. Consistency is how a new user learns the system without being taught.

Highly opinionated components work for the same reason a good picture book works. The structure carries the load, so the person using it can focus on the story — or the task — in front of them.
