Designing books for children who are still learning to read is a plain-language masterclass.

Young readers do not skim past a confusing sentence and fill in the gaps from experience. They stop. The story only continues when the words carry them, one clear idea at a time, in an order that makes the next idea easier.

Adult services make the opposite assumption constantly — that readers will decode dense instructions, remember an earlier step, and recover on their own when the language fails them. Many cannot, and the cost lands on the person with the least time and fewest alternatives.

Write the instruction so a tired, distracted, first-time reader can act on it correctly the first time. Short sentences. Familiar words. One action per step. That discipline learned from children's books holds up everywhere, including a benefits form at midnight.
