Six years of work to make WordPress admin notices announce to screen readers — reverted in a day.

On Trac ticket #50486, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg wrote "Please revert all of this," and told Andrea Fercia — a core committer since 2015 who has contributed to 33 releases — that he no longer holds any WordPress.org positions and should contribute his talents to another project. The change was reverted within about a day and pushed to a future release.

Whatever you think of the decision, the lesson is structural: accessibility that lives inside a platform you don't control can be undone by one person's decision. If your CMS or your vendor carries your accessibility, you don't own it — you're renting it.

Own the standard. Test with actual users. Keep the expertise in-house, even when a platform helps.
